The Exploder, a shortboard shape for traditional surfing
This “Exploder” was designed for our friends who ride short boards and has proven itself in a wide range of conditions. The idea for the “Exploder” was to create a board with a shape that easily paddles into waves but with a performance-oriented outline and rocker profile for precise short board surfing. The prototype “Exploder” has become the “go to” board for its owner!
We built the “Exploder” prototype with the same lightweight materials we use on all of our boards. The “fishbone” framework is CNC cut from 4mm BS 1088 marine plywood with all frame material not required for the structure removed during the CNC machining process. The strip material is paulownia wood. The paulownia strips we used for the “Exploder” are ¼” thick and the board is glassed with one layer of 4oz cloth and epoxy resin. The fin setup on the “Exploder” is thruster style and the finished weight of the board with the fins in place is eight pounds.

Printable plans are a good option if you live outside the United States and want to save on import tariffs. Fins: Fins and fin boxes are not included in the above estimate. The “Exploder” was designed as a three-fin board. We have found http://hanalei-fins.surf/ to be an excellent choice and love the fin box design and range of fin shapes. They also have GREAT customer service! We place the US style center fin box 3 ¼” from the tail and on the “side bites” we place use 8 ¼” from the tail to the shapers mark. We like the XPD2 series fins from Hanalei fins work great on this board. If you would like specific recommendations please contact us here at Clearwood Paddelboards.
